Skywatcher Maksutov Cassegrain 127/1500

Hi Forum pals:
This is my first message on this forum and I'm having a question since I decided to go for a Telescope, that I'd mainly like to use to see Deep Sky Objects (and to try to perform som astrophotography of them) and also a little of Planets (and also do some astrophotography on these)

Since I need a prtable scope so I use it more frequently, I'm almost deciding on a Skywatcher Maksutov Cassegrain of 127mm aperture and 1500mm of focal lenght. This scope is the same that is sold in USA as Orion.

Does anyone have an advise regarging the poor luminosity of a mak 127/1500 like this, and if it will perform very bad on Deep Sky Objects? Does someone has this kinf of scope and feel that I wil regret to buy it because I won't see anything when trying to focus on DSO?

Thanks
Lucho

Hello Lucho,

Welcome to Extreme Astronomy,

I for one haven't had a great deal experience with a Mak so I hesitate to comment. I am hoping another member with more Mak experience than myself will answer your questions.

If you do plan on using the Mak for Astrophotography it will only be useable for bright deep-sky objects and the planets due to it's long focal length. You will probably need a focal reducer for most deep-sky objects.

Regards,

hi Lucho,

I have 2 telescopes and one of them is a mak skywatcher 103 and my f ratio is 1300, that is way too much for deep space photography
i also have a 203 mm with an f5 , which is a fast ratio good for astrophoto.
if you want to go into astrophoto id pic something with a fast f ratio, fast telescopes are made for slow f ratio, you would for sure need a focul reducer if you would get something slow.
my skywatcher 203 mm scope is 1000mm at f/5 and is more then enough for deep space.

good luck
