Anyone catch the Moon halo tonight?

Earlier this evening, I stepped outside to yell at the dog to stop barking (that's a whole 'nother story), and noticed the absolutely awesome halo around the Moon. It looked like the Moon was embedded in soft, glowing cotton, with a subdued rainbow ring around the edge of the cotton. Around the rainbow ring, there was a band of deep, slightly dulled blue-green. Truly amazing!

I went inside to tell folks about it and make some calls so they could take pictures, grabbed my own camera and headed back out - And it was Gone.

Just wondering if anyone else here saw the halo? I appreciated seeing it, but sometimes it's just so much more enjoyable if find someone to share/confirm your sighting. Know what I mean?

I didn't see it tonight. If I recall correctly we were out past dark with the kids a few weeks ago during a bright moon. I pointed out a ring around the moon to my 8 year old and gave him a quick introduction to ice crystals in the atmosphere. It actually may not have been the first time he had the introduction but hey, let the old man talk.

Regards,

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. I used to be the night sky guru for my nephews (6 of 'em!) - I just couldn't resist showing them the stars and talking endlessly about the wondrous stuff "up there." But they're all grown up now. Thankfully, finally, Those nephews have 4 kids between them now and I'm looking forward to sparking their interests in the sights of the night whenever I can. I just really love showing little kids around the night sky.

HI Bluefire,
I too saw the halo, its pretty erie at times ,I often get to see it when there is plenty of humidity and cold so we get Ice crystals in our atmosphere, its awsome with a full moon.
have you ever seen a sun dog?
those are neat also!
