Possible Meteorite hits a Home

Hello Folks,
I awoke this morning to a news flash on TV and on AOL, apparently an object fell from the sky went thru the roof of a home, broke some bathroom tiles, bounced off and, lodged itself in a wall.
No one was hurt luckily, and the police were called and, are supposedly having the metallic object analyzed, but no details as to who is examining the object.
From the reports, the object is metallic but its unusually heavy given its size.
From what I have learned most meteorites are either stone or Iron or a mixture of rock and metals or minerals. the object does not appear to come from any aircraft.
here is a link to the story http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a...04063909990003
My gut felling is, that its a metallic meteorite, with an unusual mix of heavier than iron materials.
Dennis

Hi Dennis! I saw that report also. One can only hope the house owners can sell it to the scientists to cover repair costs.

Also on the news this morning was a video taken over Denver of what the announcers called a meteorite shower although the resident meteorologist was skeptical enough to suggest that it might be space debris. As I watched the video, I also thought space junk/debris as it was just to reminiscent of the shuttle tragedy when it broke up and burned in the atmosphere. By early afternoon I saw the report on SpaceWeather.com:
Quote:
DENVER FIREBALL: Something from space disintegrated over Denver, Colorado, this morning around 6:20 am MST (1320 UT). Witnesses describe it as "brilliant, slow, twinkling, sparkly and full of rainbow colors." It was not a meteor. The fireball was the decaying body of a Soyuz U rocket that launched the French COROT space telescope on Dec. 27th. The re-entry caused no damage on the ground--just a beautiful display in the sky.
Quite bizzare that both reports were on TV in quick succession as if the two events were related - Denver, Colorado for the fireball and Freehold Township, New Jersey for the possible meteorite.

Hi Bluefire.
As of the latest report on that object that was recovered, experts are claiming that its not from the Soyuz rocket debris.
What I find very interesting is that the object is only the size of a golf ball but weighs more than a Can of soup, more intriguing still, is the secrecy regarding that object.

No, I didn't think the two events were related - I only mentioned that I found it strange that they were reported together by the news I watched, As If they were related, when clearly they weren't.

But what is the secrecy about that object/meteorite? I've only heard that they are submitting it to scientists for examination. Color me curious.

I prefer my pyramid hat - it makes me invulnerable to alien intelligence. Unfortunately, it also makes me invulnerable to my own intelligence.

Also, I just heard this morning on MSNBC that geologists have determined the object was indeed a meteorite.

From the MSNBC news site:
Quote:
FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, N.J. - A mysterious rocklike object that crashed through the roof of a home and landed in the bathroom was a meteorite, experts said Friday.

For now, scientists are calling the dense metallic object "Freehold Township" after the place where it fell. It's about the size of a golf ball but weighs about 13 ounces, as much of a can of soup. Magnets held near it are attracted to it.

Rutgers University geologists Jeremy Delaney, Gail Ashley and Claire Condie and Peter Elliott, an independent metallurgist who studied the object, determined it was an iron meteorite because of its density, magnetic properties, markings and coloration.
