Solar physicist David Hathaway of the National Space Science & Technology Center (NSSTC) explains: "First, remember what sunspots are--tangled knots of magnetism generated by the sun's inner dynamo. A typical sunspot exists for just a few weeks. Then it decays, leaving behind a 'corpse' of weak magnetic fields."
Enter the conveyor belt.
"The top of the conveyor belt skims the surface of the sun, sweeping up the magnetic fields of old, dead sunspots. The 'corpses' are dragged down at the poles to a depth of 200,000 km where the sun's magnetic dynamo can amplify them. Once the corpses (magnetic knots) are reincarnated (amplified), they become buoyant and float back to the surface." Presto—new sunspots!

Wow,
Hi Dragon, I have never thought about the Sun's physics into that kind of detail, I knew about the basics, such as the solar wind & radiation the Coronal sphere, coronal mass ejections, but I never really got into looking at Sunspots or ever even heard of the Solar Conveyor belt.
that is so cool! I may just have to get some kind of Solar filter.
I like the HA photos that I've seen, but a 6 inch full aperture for my refractor would cost a fortune. How good is the Baader solar film for sunpots?
you have sparked a possible Divorce scenario at the Miller's Residence
LOL!

Hi Dennis

i bought some baader solor filters last year i believe, was just a sheet of a filter for 40$ , it does the trick. but one thing if u leave them around make sure u don t put them on paper the acid from the papper will make holes in them and they won t be very good for viewing kind of dangerous.
but all and all they ok for viewing i got a few good pics out of them, but if you want to do some solor viewing id sugest buy glass its a little more on the cost but way better for storage purposes.
i think i posted one pic of a sunpot in the astrophoto gallery if not ill post and was taken with a web cam.

Thanks OZZ,
I was worried that if you didnt get the film stretched out properly and had wrinkles in the film, these wrinkles may eventually lead to pin holes.
I saw some of this film it was a 10"x10" sheet for $29.95 US, at Rivers Camera and Telescope, I could stretch this out over the 4 inch aperture mask on my 6 inch lens cap. would the acid on your finger tips also degrade this film?

Hey OZZ ,
I saw your image of the sun spots very cool!
Is that the normal color that you get with the Baader Solar Film?

Hi Dennis

For the films fingerprints won t give you pinholes, but like i said if you leave them just on paper the acid will give you very small pin hole, nothen to worry about if you keep them on acid free paper. best way to do a filter i found was to use cement glue on my telescope cap and just drop it on there and afterwards put tape on 4 corners, don t want the wind blowing the sucker off and burning holes in your head heheh.(that would end you obervation session real quick)

oh ya for the color i messed with the colors its kind of a grey or purple color

my next buy is prob gona be a glass solor filter..
