Software There is lots of good Astronomy related software available. Star Charts, Planetariums, Telescope Control, Satellite Tracking are a few examples.

Starry Night Pro

I upgraded my Starry Night Enthusiast the other day to Starry Night Pro. Starry Night is a very good product and they are as of today, still offering an upgrade promotion of $20.05 if you currently own a version of Starry Night and want to upgrade to a more current version. During the check-out just use the coupon "upgrade2005" without the quotes and they will subtract $20.05 off eligible orders. I thought the promotion was only suppose to last until the end of 2005 but as I said it is still working today.

The main reason for my upgrade is Starry Night Pro adds telescope control and several other features recently added in the new 5.7 version.

Hi Darryl ! can you tell me a little more about Starry Night?

Actually I have the Cartes Du Ciel software. It is a planeterium program that can be downloaded free. I have found it very useful for locating certain ojects in the sky.

It also comes with a basic telescope control interface.

There’s a basic telescope control interface (GOTO) via a serial port. You can either have the Meade LX200 style controls which are supported by a number of telescope control manufacturers or you can use the ASCOM standard interface.

Hi Diana,

Cartes Du Ciel is an excellent planetarium program. I have used it for printing charts and for controlling my telescope when I am out observing. I still use it. It is installed on my computer right next to Starry Night Pro.

Starry Night Pro is a very good commercial product that tends to have more eye candy than some of the other planetarium programs, along with a couple of unique features that are nice to use. One such feature is a graph that you can plot objects of your choice, which gives you a visual representation of the time they rise and set.

If you want to try Starry Night without investing a lot, try their downloadable version from here http://www.starrynight.com. Oh great, you had to ask. They have a discount on upgrades right now and I was thinking of getting their Starry Night Astrophoto Suite. Must resist.

I just upgrade my Starry Night Pro to the Starry Night Astrophoto Suite. Upgrading to the Starry Night Astrophoto Suite gives you Maxim DL Lite which is a toned down version of Maxim DL. The full version of Maxim DL is a very sophisticated astronomical imaging program, and one of the best out there. Maxim DL Lite gives you a chance to use some of the features of Maxim DL, but at a reduced price.

I haven't had much of a chance to use it yet, but am certainly looking forward to it.
