Stuart's Astrophotography

I've started my gallery with two images of the same object: Orion. I chose this because (a) I just took it a few days ago, and (b) I think it is absolutely amazing for light-polluted skies.

Note: I have optimized all of my images on my computers, which are Macs, and one is a laptop and the other has a flat-screen monitor. I have noticed on the CRT screen in my office on campus that the images look much worse, darker, and have less contrast. So, if you don't have a flat-screen or a good CRT, they might not look as good and I recommend you view 'em on something else.

P.S. Should I add a nice, fancy border and caption stuff? Akin to my image here: http://burro.astr.cwru.edu/stu/me/ph...060302_big.jpg

Hi Stuart,

Nice pictures.

When you say light polluted skies, where were these pictures taken?

I have noticed quite a difference in image quality when viewing on an LCD monitor vs. a CRT. The LCD seems to bring out more detail and is quite a bit brighter. I have never used a really good CRT so maybe they are better, but how much better than my Dell wide screen LCD I wouldn't know. I just got the Dell and its the best monitor I have ever owned as far as picture quality goes.

To frame the pictures like that great moon shot you have taken is up to you. My preference is to have pictures of the moon and planets surrounded in the blackness of space, without having a border to close to the subject or at all. The labelling like you did with one of the pictures you uploaded is really good as well. Its nice you provided with and without the labelling, it can then be enjoyed in different ways.

Thanks Darryl, Yes I did see it.

The link took me to a pic of the Moon. Was that the one?

New image posted of Moon last night (March 7, 2006). 62% Full (not the 64% that I labeled the image as ... but I can't figure out how to fix that). 20-image mosaic taken with a 16" telescope.

Hi Stuart,

Very nice picture of the moon! What type of telescope was the picture taken through? What software was used to create the mosaic?

I changed your image title to 62% for you. You should find an "Image Tools" selection when displaying the large view of the image on its own. It should have a drop down to let you edit that image.

Thanks for fixing the title; my bad for not seeing that.

The telescope was a Cassegrain with a 16" mirror, 192" focal length, and f/12. The images were stitched using a program called Stitcher and then further processing was done in Photoshop.
