Name The Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope

How about giving a new name to the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST). I know some of you may you will be interested in putting your two cents in to giving this telescope a name. Just think, you could go down in history as having named a telescope. NASA is looking for a name for their new telescope which you can submit here. It's purpose is to look for some of the most violent and powerful energy discharges and interactions in our Universe.

The events and objects that this telescope will be used to research will be such things as the origin of cosmic rays, study solar flares from our sun, and pulsars. It will also look for and study Gamma Ray Bursts which are some of the most powerful events in our Universe as well as the jets from black holes that accelerate matter to almost the speed of light.

So give it shot and see if you can name NASA's new telescope.

I don't normally participate in something like this, but as soon as I finished making the first post here, I went and entered a few names for the new NASA space telescope. It was actually sort of fun. I got on a roll and must have entered 10 or so different names.

Hi Darryl,

Thanks for the heads up on this one, the name I chose and entered is The Hawking Space Telescope.

Hi Dennis,

It's a good name. I think I read on the site somewhere that to name GLAST after a scientist or person the individual had to be deceased. I found it, here it is "In keeping with NASA tradition, the satellite will not be named after a person who is still living." I guess it would be ok if you were betting the person wouldn't be around by the time they get to naming the GLAST telescope. I make no reflection on the name you suggested with this comment.

Regards,

It really is shame. Not to be able to bask in the glory of having a spacecraft named after you. Oh well!
